In addition to pre-purchase and insurance surveys, he
investigates damage
claims for several major insurance companies.
Prior to starting All Boat & Yacht
Inspections, LLC, Derek apprenticed with Jack Hornor, who is a
senior marine surveyor and a naval architect, and spent seven
years working for Marine Survey & Design Company.
Derek has
owned several cruising sailboats and has voyaged to the
Caribbean, Bermuda and New England. Currently he owns a
1954 36’ Chesapeake Bay wooden workboat which previously was
used for commercial oyster harvesting. Derek is an avid
fisherman and occasionally races on other people’s sailboats.
He enjoys working on boats and has performed major restorations
of several vessels, including two boats which he bought for salvage after
they had been sunk.
As part of
his continuing education, Derek attends regular education and
training programs, and is the program coordinator for the
Mid-Atlantic Mariners Club, which is an association of
professionals involved in the marine insurance industry. The

boating organizations, including presentations on ABYC Standards
